What is ee?

.ee is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of Estonia, operated by Estonian Internet Foundation. What is ee
The top-level domain .ee was introduced in 1992 and was operated by EENet until July 2010. Origianally, there was a limit of one domain name per legal entity, and registrations of additional domain names to protect trademarks were specifically denied because "The domain name has no trademark status". As domains under .ee were meant to be an institution's identification on the Internet (like the register code in the commercial register). Valid registrations were free of charge.

Actual Use
.ee domains are very popular in Estonia and are now also available globally. Foreign entities can now register .ee domains although all domains must have an administrative contact with residence in Estonia and is usually provided for free by registrar.

Domain Structure

Registrations are taken directly at the second level, or at the third level beneath various second-level labels
  • com.ee - for commercial websites
  • pri.ee - for private individuals
  • med.ee - for medical institutions

Domain relaunch

To clean up the .ee domain registry, the new order of registration of .ee TLD became available on July 5, 2010. Estonian Internet Foundation took over .ee ccTLD registry functions from EENet. All existing domains registered before the transition must be re-registered during a 6 month transition period ending on January 5, 2011. New .ee domain rules allow unlimited number of domains to be registered by a single entity. Private persons can now register domains directly under .ee.

When the relaunch was finalized, the annual fee for a .ee domain was announced to be 285 Estonian kroons (~24 USD) plus tax, which was met with wide criticism. However I believe this move was necessary, because at the time when domain registraions were limited to 1 domain per legal entity a lot of valuable domain names were registered illegally by Estonian and foreign individuals who used fake information collected from internet to register extremely valuable generic names like, car.ee, seo.ee, blog.ee etc. Since those individuals were not able to confirm the identity that they used to register domains they were unable to legally re-register their domains, so a lot of great domain names were deleted and became available again on April 6th, 2011.

We were able to snap the names like Money.ee, Fashion.ee, style.ee, people.ee, Kids.ee, ask.ee, baby.ee, cash.ee, cool.ee, diet.ee, dollar.ee, photos.ee, Puzzle.ee, sound.ee, watch.ee, and a lot of other one word generic domain names incl. three- and two-letter domains. NY.ee, Ca.ee, DC.ee,
